wonderfully acted and very visually interesting. for the less literate beware of the subtitles.

Since this is a foreign film it's not rated. Be forewarned that there is a lot of full nudity and a bordello scene with group activites graphically depicted. Great story, but not one to watch with the kids as an art history lesson.

Even though I took art history courses in college, I had never heard of Artemisia Gentileschi. I remember when one of my professors was asked why he didn't talk about distinguished women painters, he retorted, "Because there AREN'T any!" Now, of course, everyone knows that this is nonsense. Artemisia was perhaps the earliest woman who was given the opportunity to learn drawing and painting, in a time when women weren't allowed to study art. This film grew on me as I watched it. It has intensity and passion, and Valentina Cervi as Artemisia changes from innocent child to knowing woman before our eyes. The movie's photography and surroundings are outstanding.
