What makes this movie so great is that the movie becomes exactly what Burt Reynold's character aspires for his tastelesss adult movies to be. His character's failed attempts in the beginning of the movie to make a 'porn that means something' is only a setup. The beginning of the movie is horribly acted and horribly written on purpose to provide a powerful contrast to the pulp fiction like direction of the later part of the movie. If you don't pay attention in the first 30 minutes because it is "cheesy", you simply won't get what this movie is about.

I find myself taken back by people that quickly judge this movie to be trash and "risky" because its backdrop is the porn industry. This movie IS NOT ABOUT PORN. This movie is about a collective group that creates a family for themselves. Just like all families, they have their ups and downs, though with much more dramatic results than you or I would encounter. That's why it's a movie. The acting is beautiful. The cinematography is beautiful. It's obvious the director (Paul Thomas Anderson) is in complete control of his film. The director would go on to make outstanding movies like "Magnolia" and "Punch Drunk Love," but I still feel this one is his best.

The star power and the excellent script make this movie a must see. Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore all play roles that are unexpected and do a fabulous job.

I didn't like all the losers and dreamers and their mishaps. Although they did gather around a producer and became friends, they were boring.

This movie is so boring and retarded. FF to the end for a shot of Dirk Diggler's you-know-what, but it isnt too great anyway.
