Fall (1997) Reviews

Fall (1997)
Member Rating:
In this romantic comedy drama, a mismatched couple (who aren't as mismatched as they believe) are brought together by fate and have to decide if they should stay together. Sarah (Amanda DeCadenet) leads a charmed life: She's a supermodel widely regarded as the most beautiful woman in the world, she's a multimillionaire, and she's married to a wealthy European aristocrat, Phillippe (Rudolph Martin), whom she loves deeply. So when Sarah hails a cab and the driver, Michael (Eric Schaeffer), tries to pick her up, it's no surprise that she's not interested. But fate keeps bringing Sarah and Michael together over the next few days, and eventually the witty and charming cabbie wears down her resistance. They end up back at Michael's apartment after sharing dinner together, and before long, the two are engaged in an extended and highly passionate lovemaking session. It turns out that not all is as it seems; Phillippe has lost interest in Sarah, sexually despite her love for him, and Michael is not just a cab driver, but a once-wealthy and famous author who chose to retreat from the limelight. Racked with guilt the next morning over her infidelity, Sarah tries to convince Michael that they should remain friends and nothing more, while he is convinced that he's met the love of his life. Eric Schaeffer wrote, produced, and directed Fall, as well as played Michael. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The first part of the movie was wildly erotic to me. I didn't expect, however, for it to pull on my heart strings. I truly believe this movie touches on emotions that may be dulled by big names and expensive cinematogrophy. The mostly unrecognizable characters make it believeable and suck you in to the story, in my opinion. Actually, I think that the lead actress is quite beautiful and um, the lead actor is HOTT!!! And, I may be mistaken, but I believe that a young Scarlett Johansson has a bit part in this as well. It's just a flash, but she's there. I'm just wondering if this movie has a soundtrack, both verbal and musical.

I am so surprised that there is no commotion mentioned around this movie. I picked it up on a friend's recommendation and my husband--who is 1000% action-thriller man, and I--artsy-intimate-human story woman, both completely warmed to it. I felt like I really scored that my husband liked this artsy, NYCity flavored, emotion accessing but not sappy romance. I wish more directors were willing to explore putting poetry as a primary communication mode for a movie--music so often is! This film also has a reality flavor in that it choses the vernacular/mundane scenes to engage us, but definitely progresses along a story line unlike reality shows. This movie has the feeling of a wonderful memory. It was that warm and personal.

You have to see thew story for what it is. An indy flick. There is no Angelina Jolie to visually satisfly your suspension of disbelief of oh this is the most beautiful girl in the world. Which in some irony she turned out to be to the cab driver but not because of her outward beauty but her intelligence/personality. The director/writer takes risk some don't payoff some do in spades. I adored the use of poetry as a vehicle. Also, he does give us a reason to believe why a cab driver would write so wonderfully skilled.. It's essentially about a woman struggle between security(money) and the type of love and understanding she dreams about or for lack of a better word substance. The first time they have sex is written like first time sex with a new person sometimes is awkward.I am not going to lie it's a cheaply made film but it's the screenplay that makes it worthwhile, and like all great loves even when it's over life goes on.

A real indie romance, which in 1997 was probably before its time and would have appeared avant-garde. Now, merely derivative. A plus is the way auteur Eric Schaeffer handles his writing, directing and acting chores. I guess it would now hold interest for budding film students.

Pretentious drivel that was sent to us without us having chosen it. Terrible film. Shameful waste by BB of one of our rentals. Thanks for nothing.

WOW! I am surprised that I had never heard talk of this movie. It was erotic and poetic. As a woman who is struggling with the conflict of being in love with two men, this movie provided understanding of that reality, the seduction and pain.

Low budget, poorly made vanity piece for Eric Schaeffer. He has a nice voice but tries to do too many things in this movie. Needs a better screen writer.

The basis of the plot has a good idea but it is executed in such an overly dramatic and unreal manner you don't beleive this is really happening between the characters. As a result, the movie is just plain ridiculous. The moive has a slight 9 1/2 weeks feel. The script presumes the characters break through and reach some deep level of intamcy by fulfilling erotic fantasies. The acting does not make you believe they have any real feelings at all, much less a extreme desire for each other. The cab driver character will continuely bore you with his inane melodramtic ramblings. The poor Sarah character is supposed to be a supermodel- "The most beautiful woman in the world...", I have no disrespect towards the actress who played her, but she was not believable as an extraordinary beauty. My point is, to get into the story, you have to believe it. The person who wrote this expects you to believe and get into it, without any support.
