Though officially based on Pierre Schoendoerffer's novel L'Adieu au Roi, Farewell to the King also bears echoes of Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim--with a lot of filmmaker John Milius' own Hemingwayesque slant thrown in. During World War II, American POW Learoyd (Nick Nolte) escapes a Japanese firing squad. Hiding himself in the wilds of Borneo, Learoyd is adopted by a head-hunting tribe of Nyak Indians, who consider him "divine" because of his elaborate tattoos. Before long, Learoyd is the reigning king of the Nyaks. When British soldiers approach him to rejoin the war against the Japanese, Learoyd resists (in language so flowery that it could have been written by Sir Walter Scott). But when his own tribe is threatened by the invaders, the "king" deigns to fight for their rights. Farewell to the King is breathtakingly photographed and quite exciting at times. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

My father found this to be a good movie. As far as a war movie Nick Nolte played a role as good as you can get. Sincerely Robert M.

Nick Nolte does a tour de force as a would be king of the natives in a very primative country during the end of the 2nd WW..whether or not he deserted is unclear somehwhat but comes into play at the end of the story..Nigel Havers also does a creditable job as typical Brit officer but his part is believable.I enjoyed the film..3 stars!!

John Milius, of Apocalypse Now and Conan the Barbarian, writes and directs this Rudyard Kipling style tale. Flawed in parts, but still entertaining. A story for the escapist in us all. If you're expecting Apocalypse Now, then forget it.

I truly enjoyed this film as I am a WW II buff and particularily am interested in the area that this story takes place. I thought the general snooty attitude of the British came thru very clear. Nolte gave a very believable performance. On a scale of 1 to 10, the movie rates a 9.

I have not seen acting this bad in a long time. It could have been done this well be a cast of high schoolers who had never acted before. Save your time, rent something else. It really was all around bad. I barely made it to the end, I kept hoping it would redeem itself.

While not an outstanding film, this movie holds its own. With a plot that just barely requires one to suspend disbelief, Nick Nolte is solid in this. Some interesting twists, a few gory fight scenes and a premise that does intrigue, I say if you're either a Nolte fan or a WWII buff, you will like this.

That could be another title for this slow, boring movie. I let it run while I did household chores, stopping to watch some of the action scenes, which were spaced apart too far. Some of the battle scenes were ok, but that's about it.
