It proposes the possiblity of a greater force in the universe and possible intelligent life outside of our little solar system. Brilliant movie. It will leave you with a sense of wonder. Read More The great travesty in Peter Hyam's dull and pointless 2010 is how it revises 2001. Now Dave says something as he enters the monolith even though he didn't in 2001 and the movie uses the line over and over again. It's almost as if the movie couldn't exist without it. We're also told exactly why HAL malfunctions. We didn't need to know why! I seriously doubt the reason given here is what Kubrick had in mind. It appears to only be put in to further the "government is bad, science is good" stance the film takes. There are, however, two scenes that I actually liked. A character from the first film showing up on the Discovery and telling Roy Scheider's character to anticipate, "something wonderful" has a certain aura about it that makes it work, and the last shot of the film has an awe-inspiring quality to it. Otherwise, it's a pretty lifeless (and not in the same way as 2001) sci-fi film that gets way too preachy about the Russian/American cold war. Just watch 2001 twice. Read More the sequel to 2001 and I liked this movie almost as well. Made much later, this film has a more stringent script and allows a main stream audience to understand the point. Kubrick's original forces the audience to consider its own beliefs, this movie states outright its beliefs. It explains some points from the first film not readily understood by most movie goers. The effects are good, the acting is good and the storyline is beleivible. I highly recommond this movie. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I always found Stanley Kubrick's 2001: a space odyssey to be over hyped, slightly confusing, and very inaccessible to a wide audience. 2010 is a more straight forward science fiction tale. It's the perfect companion to 2001. It explains and ties up the loose ends of 2001 and carves out it's own place in cinema history. Although the original was made in 1968, this movie is a sequel, but also heavily inspired by movies like Alien and Star Wars. It has an incredible look and feel to it. The special effects are top shelf. The acting is also very good, it is an all star cast after all. If you're like me, and needed a little more straight forward explanation from 2001, you enjoy 2010. It's very well done and a perfect compliment to 2001. Everything is brought full circle. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

I just wanted a glimpse of the weirdness. Even an easy to predict plot that went through the paces of explaining 2001 Space Odyssey would have been more interesting. And no monkeys? Come on. Everyone loves monkeys. It's only worth watching if you are CRAZY curious for a hint at conclusions of the prequel. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Lost is the sense of bewilderment and the mystical. These things are supplanted by an 80s style cold war turning hot, in which fellow Soviet cosmonauts make English idiomatic mistakes that their American counterparts cutely correct. This is a movie to enjoy the space shots, park one's brain outside and eat popcorn. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
