LOI successfully blends horror, film noir and a thriller to create a movie that explores the dark side of magic; what the story deems as REAL magic, as opposed to illusion, which magicians perform. A group of cultists are intent on resurrecting their long since dead and buried leader, Nix. And, Harry Demore (Bakula), and Swann, Nixs' old protegé (Kevin J. O'Connor), who was responsible for binding Nix in the earth, are intent on stopping him. Very good movie, atmospheric, strange and interesting characters, good story, and steeped in the occult. Don't let the presence of Scott Bakula scare you off, it's a really good movie and Bakula does a good job as the "semi-burnt out" detective hired to protect Swann's girlfriend (Famke Janssen), but gets dragged into a hellish case that he must solve, and that just may kill him.

'Lord of Illusions' is a very creepy and disturbing film but it also is cheesy and has some plot holes in it. The movie's premise is very intriguing but it isn't executed anywhere near as well as it could be. Scott Bakula really hams it up in this with a corny performance, while Famke Janssen is actually pretty solid. You may recognize Kruger from Malcolm in the Middle as the head bad guy/demon/monster who is always fun if not repulisive to watch (he's pretty gross looking towards the end.) In the end, 'Lord of Illusions' packs in some weirdness, gore and chills, but it lacks a lot too. It's definetely not one of Clive Barker's best films (for that rent either 'Hellraiser' or the ulta-scary 'Candyman'.) I can't recommend renting this, but if you come across it one night on tv when nothing else is on, I'd maybe give it a shot. Film Grade: C
