Underground (1995)

Underground (1995)
Member Rating:
An unpredictable black comedy with an epic scope, Emir Kusturica's highly acclaimed Underground takes a look at the modern history of Yugoslavia through the often absurd misadventures of two friends over several decades. The film begins in Belgrade in 1941, establishing the friendship between the gregarious Blacky and the more intellectual Marko during a drunken, late-night musical procession that establishes the riotous tone to follow. Fellow members of the Communist Party, the friends also share an involvement in shady business activities and an attraction for a beautiful actress. Soon, the chaos of World War II forces them to take refuge in an underground shelter with a variety of other townspeople. Years pass and the war ends, but Marko and the actress trick the others into believing that the war is still going on. Kusturica turns this inherently absurd premise into a vibrant portrait of the contradictory, foolish nature of war. Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, the film received great acclaim on the festival circuit but had a hard time securing a release in the United States. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

This was easily the strangest war movie I ever saw. Let's say you're Belgrade and you don't give a crap. Then Germany gets all riled up and rolls over your but. THEN the allied bomb your stuff up some more! WTF? Are you a commie? Do you prefer Tito? Where da whores at? It's as if you started with Hogan's Heroes (with a better set) then tossed in a little Spies Like Us and then sprinkled in a little Saturday Night Live and simmered on low for ten minutes. Then you sauteed a little The Piano for a while and gently whisked in a sort of bumbling Bill Hanning as a German higher-up who's hot for the lead babe (who looks a lot like a shorter, blonder, more Serbian Mira Sorvino - the most enjoyable character in the film) then gently folded it all together in a nice Pyrex pie plate, covered and chilled for an hour and then served cold. Good news - the drunken tank dance was easily worth the price of admission!

Blacky, Marko and the brass band are fabulous. I love how Marko gleefully removes his watch each time he helps Blacky in a fight. This movie was uncomfortably long. I appreciate the history and scope of the project. Still, I had to watch it over two nights.

To any and all who are about to see this film, please check your typical Hollywood standards at the door. This film is anything but Hollywood which makes it great. It did not get all the awards it has by being a cheap run of the mill film either. Though it is long and I mean loooong, it's unique characters come to life along with its humor and wit. If you love foreign films such as Amelie or My Beautiful Life, then you owe to your self to watch this incredible tale!
