This biography of Ludwig von Beethoven (played here by Gary Oldman) builds its narrative around an actual letter found after his death, addressed only to the composer's "immortal beloved." The responsibility of discovering this mysterious person's identity falls to Beethoven's friend and secretary (Jeroen Krabbé), who sets out on an investigation that soon becomes an exploration of the composer's life. Through recollections and scattered hints, we receive glimpses of Beethoven's relationships with women, particularly his close interaction with a pair of very different Countesses. The film also pays prominent attention to the composer's oddly obsessive relationship with the young nephew whom he attempted to mold in his own image, and Beethoven's eventual hearing loss and descent into emotional instability. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

This movie was a wonderful surprise to me...a very touching film. While I had no interest in seeing it until a friend recommended it, it quickly became one of my favorites...a must have for my home-DVD collection. If you are a "romantic" by nature, you will love it! (Tip: Keep a box of kleenex near by...you'll need them!) The acting in the movie was terrific! Whereas I never really gave Beethoven much thought before, this movie gave me a real appreciation for him and his music. My husband (who typically likes mainly horror/suspense type films) even liked it. Wonderful story with a great romantic core.

Rent this movie and for a couple of hours you will forget whatever it is that pains you and be immersed in the life of one of the most wonderful humans to grace this planet as he his elevated to otherworldly status by this movie's depiction of his love affairs, troubled childhood, madness and music. It's mind boggling how his music can touch your soul. Wow!

The music is phenomenal, and Gary Oldman plays INTENSE very well. I even could appreciate him as a romantic leading man. Filmed in Prague in true period locations made the look of the film a wonderful step back in time. But I was saddened that the director had a deep desire to tell sordid fictional stories about this famous character, and he admits as much on the DVD commentary track. Thus we get a womanizing, mean, obsessed man, whose only good character was his music. See the movie for the romance and the music, just don't listen to the DVD commentary. It will mess up your first impression of it.
