This is the only film from the career of the fabulous Zarah Leander to be issued with English subtitles to date (attention Kino Video: MORE PLEASE!), and the film isn't wonderful, but as a first taste of a career that, in and of itself, packed more drama than any dozen Douglas Sirk films, it's a joy. If you've never heard of La Zarah, it's because history has frowned upon her and successfully swept her under the rug. She's the one who, as Dietrich and the other superstars of pre-WW2 Germany fled the oncoming Nazi regime, remained behind to become the biggest fish in a now-much-smaller pond. By all accounts, she despised the Nazis as much as any of the expatriates, but sold her soul for stardom. Much more to the story, which would make a GREAT movie (certainly better than this middling romantic meller with songs...she sang WONDERFULLY). Start with this one, then if you want more (and you will), help me pressure Kino into releasing more...my lonely voice is being ignored so far.

Interesting... they depict the Ricans as savages, tend to talk more about the bullfighting (in Rico??), but show wonderful black and white picturesque landscapes of the Island. I could almost hear the birds. If not viewing for the almost comical aspect or to see a racist slant of how the director must have perceived the islanders to be, I would not rent it.
