The Blue Kite (1993)

The Blue Kite (1993)
Member Rating:
Tian Zhuangzhuang, a charter member of China's politically beleaguered, so-called Fifth Generation of Directors (along with Ju Dou's Zhang Yimou), made this film about the gradual disintegration of an entire family targeted by Mao's political reformation movements of the '50s and '60s. Told in a series of three stories, the audience sees the little boy Tietou and his mother try and try again to rebuild their lives from the ashes left them by the madness of the era. Director Tian works from a palette of primary colors on widescreen images that are often fixed in an icy-white Kubrickian glare of omnipresent paranoia. Yet much of The Blue Kite is resplendent with palpable signs of ordinary life: noisy kids, happy weddings, loud mealtimes. Tian amplifies the human element of these heady days, so that viewers may genuinely feel the humanity ripped from this story as events overtake and shatter all hope. ~ Tom Keogh, Rovi

Quite contrary to the first poster, the acting and story are both excellent. It is sad and tragic, however. If you don't like foreign films or heavy drama, stay away. Otherwise, a great Chinese film about the insanity of that country's cultural revolution in the 50's-70's. Check out Ebert's review of it on his site. He has it on his list of great movies.

There is a reason the Chinese government will not allow this movie. It makes the government look like the culture and people killer it truly is. I have fallen in love with this movie. You feel like you need to jump in and help but you cant. I do not like the ending...but so far China has no real good ending either. Perhaps someday it could be redone with good effects, tweak the storyline to include more family and a happy ending to the family.

I was pretty much astounded to read the first review. This movie was excellent. The acting was great. The young actors who played TieTou was remarkable as well. The story reminded me to "To Life" but a much shorter movie. We should thank our lucky stars being born in a freedom-based societty.
