In this post-modernist exercise, star/writer Steve Martin and director Carl Reiner spoof the film noir yarns of the '40s with Martin playing gumshoe Rigby Reardon, who interacts with a legion of Hollywood greats -- including Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Edward Arnold, Barbara Stanwyck, Ingrid Bergman, Veronica Lake, Bette Davis, Lana Turner and Joan Crawford -- in a succession of intercut clips from seventeen vintage Hollywood films. Rigby is a low-rent detective (his fee is $10 per day) sitting in his office, waiting for something to happen. That something happens when the voluptuous Juliet Forrest (Rachel Ward) arrives in his office and faints dead away at the sight of a newspaper that reports on her father's death in a car accident. Juliet is convinced that her father was murdered and offers Rigby $200 to investigate. Upon searching Mr. Forrest's office, he comes upon a list of names under the headings "The Friends and Enemies of Carlotta." As the two delve deeper into the mystery and its requisite deceptions, they encounter an "exterminator," Juliet's surly Nazi butler, Field Marshal Von Kluck (Carl Reiner) and an overly helpful Mexican friend, Carlos Rodriguez (Reni Santoni). ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

This is a masterpiece that has been forgotten. I have no idea why it isn't mentioned with Steve Martin's best work. Maybe because it's not in color, and modern audiences need color to keep their attention. "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" a black-and-white take-off of old film noir detective stories like Marlowe and Sam Spade -- you know, the ones where the private eyes are tough guys who talk to themselves in the narrative -- but Martin and director Carl Reiner take short clips from old film noir detective movies and insert them into the film as if Steve is actually acting with tough guys like Bogart, Cagney, and others. It is not only hilarious, it's brilliant. I love Steve Martin -- saw him when he was doing standup and I've enjoyed almost all of his movies, but this one makes me laugh louder and more often than any other. By the way, Rachel Ward is a knockout as she spoofs Lauren Bacall. RENT IT!!

"The Big Sleep", "Double Indemnity", "White Heat", "Sorry, Wrong Number", and not one but TWO movies from the Master of Suspense himself! Throw in a Miklos Rozsa score, and then turn the whole thing upside down by adding Steve Martin. What more could you want? Funny on its own, but definitely a must-see of you like classic movies.
