Not only does this film bring to light the emotional connections that mental health professionals (such as psychiatrists) can develop towards patients - including in this case a violation of an ethical boundary, but this film also explores the role of those around the person with a serious mental illness. In Mr Jones we see how those around Mr Jones do not always have an accurate perspective on what he is engaged in - from people he has just met to those who are more fond of him (eg a coworker and his psychiatrist). This may raise questions about how accurate their reports and decisions are for the patient - whether theu engage in wishful thinking, can't see beyond their emotions to what has occurred, are fearful for other family members, etc. This film can be used to raise lots of good questions around serious mental illness.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is not a master work but I think it is a very enjoyable film with some dramatic parts. All in all I find this movie very uplifting. R. Gere is perfect for the role of Mr. Jones. Worth watching.
