The Dawn Patrol (1938)

The Dawn Patrol (1938)
Member Rating:
This 1938 remake of Howard Hawks' 1930 film The Dawn Patrol is faithful to the original's basic plotline. The story is set during World War I; the scene is the French headquarters of the British Royal Flying Corps, 59th division. The corps is suffering heavy losses, a fact that ace pilot Courtney (Errol Flynn) ascribes to the supposed ruthlessness of squadron commander Brand (Basil Rathbone). What the audience knows that Courtney doesn't is that Brand is distraught at losing his men, but is forced by his own superiors to push the pilots beyond their limits. After being accused day after day of being a butcher, Brand takes grim delight in turning over his command to Courtney. Soon Courtney finds himself enduring the "butcher" tag, especially after the younger brother of his best friend Scott (David Niven) is killed. To redeem himself, Courtney gets Scott drunk and takes his place in a suicidal bombing mission. Courtney is killed, Scott assumes command, and the cycle begins again. The extensive use of combat scenes from the original Dawn Patrol has led some viewers to assume that the 1930 version is the superior of the two. In fact, the remake is far better than the original on several counts, not least of which was the star power of Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone in their third screen teaming. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie was better than I expected. I feel that it accurately reflected the high attrition that took place in the flying corps in world war I. It also portrayed the stress on the men who had to send the young fliers up. Although made seventy years ago the story is still relevant today. I also enjoyed watching those old planes it amazes me that they could fly.

Sort of the Twelve O'Clock High of it's era. As much a inhumanity-of-war as a buddy movie/action flick and how can you go wrong with Basil Rathbone, David Niven, and Errol Flynn? The ending is a bit fantastical, but otherwise a nice bit of work. Not as much aerial footage as one might hope.

The Dawn Patrol is a great black and white classic which is an almost exact duplicate of a previous version made in1930 by the same name. The transfer to DVD is pretty good. The interior shots are very clear but some of the outdoor scenes are grainy. I believe much of the actual combat scenes were real or taken from the previous movie. There are no woman in this picture. The men do a lot of smoking and drinking in between missions. A lot of drinking and many toasts to their fallen friends. The typical WWI (all too true) story of unseen brass ordering commanders to send inexperienced men on almost impossible missions. Many die and are simply replaced with even more inexperienced men. This movie features an excellent cast in a very compelling WWI aerial combat saga.
