The Makioka Sisters (1983)

The Makioka Sisters (1983)
Member Rating:
The Makioka Sisters will probably best be appreciated by those with an intimate knowledge of 20th century Japanese culture. The film, set just before World War II, chronicles the experiences of four upper-class Osaka sisters, two of them married. We see the shifting political and social scene through their eyes, with director Kon Ichikawa (who adapted the film from Junichiro Tanikazi's novel) conveying the proper sense of confusion and distraction. At times the film is a little too confused and distracted, thus total audience attention is not only necessary, but mandatory. Makioka Sisters, sometimes listed as Makica Sisters, has also been released under the title Fine Snow. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Great story, nuanced acting, absolutely stunning scenery and direction. A perfect historical account of the change in Japan from the twilight of feudalism to the shadows of things to come (emergence into the 20th century, especially for women). Can't think of a better way to relate history in a nutshell. Wonderful!

An interesting look at Japanese culture and family life in 1938 that explores the relationships between the sisters and the theme of arranged marriage. The movie evolves slowly and requires that one pays attention to the names in order to appreciate the drama. It's certainly not for action fans, but will reward those who can appreciate the beauty of the blooming of the cherry blossoms and the gorgeous artwork on the kimonos.

This is an absolutely exquisite film. Although the synopsis suggests that it "will probably best be appreciated by those with an intimate knowledge of 20th century Japanese culture", this film can give any viewer a true feel for that culture. The deliberate pacing is perfectly suitable to its subject, and every aspect of the film -- the performances and the design (both costume and setting) evokes the era. In addition, the director respects the audience enough to allow them to see history in the background -- between the lines of the story.
