At first, the movie started off rather pedestrian but by the end of the film I was almost in tears. It's extremely heartfelt and moving! Definitely worth watching

Really quite fascinating little window onto the early thirties. Louis Mann plays the patriarch of this German immigrant family. If Mann is not familiar it is because he was primarily a New York stage actor. This is in fact his only sound film appearance (he died the next year). This film is also notable for early appearances by Robert Montgomery, Leila Hyams and Elliot Nugent (who also wrote the original story & co-wrote the screenplay). Directed by stalwart craftsman Sam Wood, this is a solid piece of filmmaking. The transfer on this release is really very good. The acting, writing, directing and production (by MGM) is top notch. If you like early sound films, check this one out.
