A young boy comes to fear that his blind mother may become the next victim of a serial killer in this complex psychological thriller. Unfolding at first as a traditional suspense tale, the film follows the terrified boy's attempts to determine the killer's identity, a task his policeman father has failed to achieve. Things take a more provocative and puzzling turn when the boy's penchant for fantasy is revealed, forcing the audience to question whether what has been shown has been real or merely a product of the boy's imagination. As a result, much of the anxiety in Afraid of the Dark emerges not from the violent shocks, but from the uncertain reality and the tantalizing, disturbing hints of the child's psychology. This purposeful ambiguity may strike some viewers as confusing and alienating, despite the film's assured performances and striking imagery. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

small budget character study of a little boy and his fantasy world. what we see from the start is not what we see in the end. warning: there are some bloody scenes and one nude scene so definitely not for kids. but it is interesting to watch.the squalor, graveyard and mostly-empty small streets add to the atmosphere. worth watching to open a discussion on reality and perceived reality.

I saw this uncut on cable and it's 2 movies in one: The first is a slasher pic, then it does switch and it's up to the viewer to understand what the first half of the movie was about. I'd consider it a spoiler to reveal it here, but it seemed self-explanatory if you think about it. This is not a horror movie overall, but more of a psychological story. I found it disturbing but wouldn't call it a waste of time (not for me, anyway). Some things were not explained, but the general story was revealing (my perspective, however).

This is the worst movie I have ever seen. The movie is terrible, confusing, and I didn't even know what was going on. in the middle it's like it just switched into another movie. Please do not waste your time watching this.
