A horribly disappointing disc -- especially as MGM released a widescreen and properly mastered version in Australia, of all places. For the US and Canada, this piece of rubbish is all we've got -- an image that's sub-VHS with sound that's sawmill quality. This film has a fntastic score by Ennio Morricone, but it's impossible to tell. The film itself is a violent Italian Western -- nothing unusual there. The first ten minutes are grueling and disturbing (and would later be echoed in KILL BILL and THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES), and the main body of the film is consequently about revenge -- and becoming the thing you want to kill, in the form of the cold, implacable Bill, who passes robotically through desolate landscapes in contrast to Van Cleef's Ryan, whose emotions are at the forefront. The lousy quality of the DVD saps the life from the film, however, leaving it as a fuzzy thing on the screen.
