Aerial Gunner is less of a WWII propaganda than it is a low budget romance and action film. It is a patriotic War time film, as it shows that the "good guys" volunteer for the dangerous mission, and the "bad guys" is redeemed by eventually volunteering for a suicide mission. It is fun to watch as a old time, low budget, matinee type movie from the '40s, and for some scenes from actual WWII gunnery school training. The plot is simple, and often way over melodramatic. It is not a classic war movie. Keeping that in mind, it is a sometimes fun example of the low budget movies that the studios cranked out.

Three stars. I certainly did not dislike it but I did not like it either. Aerial Gunner is a very poor transfer to DVD. The soundtrack, sound effects and audio all run together. The video (black and white) was not cleaned up. Characters in many scenes got lost in the shadows. A lot about the movie was also technically incorrect. Wrong planes were used for some of the battles. Some of the training devices were interesting. Most of the movie takes place in an aerial gunner training camp. The story is mostly done in flashback and has a silly plot. Two men with a history of bad blood between them are at the same training camp. They both fall in love with the same woman. They later meet at the same base in the Pacific. Look for a young Robert Mitchum in a couple of quick scenes. He does not appear in the credits but his name is on the box. This is a short WWII propaganda film. I can not recommend it.
