The Buddha (2010)
Member Rating:
He remains one of the most legendary and influential of all religious progenitors, but what of his actual life? In this biographical documentary, Emmy Award-winning director David Grubin tells the historical tale of Gautama Buddha (563-483 BC), from his initial enlightenment under a fig tree through his death around the age of 80. In the process, Grubin makes an unusual point: that Gautama never once claimed to be God or God's emissary, but instead sought to find a way to bring peace and alleviation from suffering to others in a cruel and often insane world. In telling this story, Grubin combines a number of elements including original animations, testimony by contemporary Buddhists such as the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, glimpses of sculptures and paintings that help tell Gautama's story, and much more. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Very enlightening documentary on the concept&purpose of the Buddha, and his following. It should be highly considered by anyone with spiritual inclinations. It is believed that during Jesus' early years He traveled to India to study this.

Found this to be a very good and informative documentary. Learned things about the Buddha's life that I did not know.

As a neophyte to Buddhism and the story of the Buddha, I was at first a little skeptical about the value of this installment - this was blown away in the first few minutes of the movie. The visual impact of The Buddha is stunning, and along with the animation & minimalist soundtrack, set the stage for the story of Siddhartha Gautama (the man who woke up; Buddha) and his journey to answer a question familiar to all of us. The Buddhist philosophy may be of no interest at all to you - even in this instance the enlightening presentation of what Buddhism is, what the tenets are and how one walks & internalizes the philosophy will be interesting to anyone and certainly helpful to see the perspective of over a nearly half a billion practitioners. This documentary was terrific and is a perfect launching pad to someone interested in exposing themselves to the 'nirvana' achievable by ANY considered mind that chooses to commit to follow the path. Happiness to you & thanks for reading!
