Academy Award-winning Harvie Krumpet director Adam Elliot returns to the world of clay animation with this simple tale of the innocent correspondence between a portly eight year old girl from the suburbs of Melbourne and a morbidly obese, middle-aged Jewish New Yorker suffering from Asperger's Syndrome. On the surface it would seem that Mary (Toni Collette) and Max (Philip Seymour Hoffman) would have little in common, but over the course of twenty years, the unlikely pen pals exchange letters discussing everything from taxidermy, trust, pets, religion, obesity, autism, agoraphobia, alcoholism, and just about any other topic that comes to mind as they sit down and put pen to paper. Barry Humphries and Eric Bana provide additional voices. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Fantastic movie that is both funny and sad at times. About two people who find one another through writing letters. The movie is also interesting to look at and it has clever writing. The clay animation is done really well.

Sad, but uplifting at the same time. Loved it so much, watched it twice and bought myself a copy. Take the time to watch this movie. You will enjoy.

A beautiful movie that is unique, charming, and truly funny. To set the right expectations it plays more like a dark comedy, but with a warm heart. The animation adds to the movie in many ways, as do the voices by Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Toni Collette. I had read good reviews on this but didn't know what to expect. I loved every second of it. Overall it's a beautiful, honest, funny and moving story about life, friendship, and family. 9.8/10
