George Falconer (Colin Firth) feels lost. Not only is he still grieving the death of his longtime companion, Jim (Matthew Goode), but he's also a Brit teaching English at a California college. He's so distraught with heartbreak that he's decided to kill himself, and proceeds to get all his affairs in order while carrying on with what otherwise would be a normal day. He gives an unusually forceful lecture to his class, revealing enough that a perceptive student, Kenny (Nicholas Hoult), senses something is wrong with the professor; collects his important financial papers from his bank; buys bullets for a handgun he owns; and makes a visit to his best friend (Julianne Moore). But throughout these methodical preparations, George keeps running into people -- a colleague's daughter, a attractive gay hustler, and the sympathetic Kenny -- who offer him glimpses of why he should stay alive. A Single Man is the directorial debut of legendary fashion designer Tom Ford. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

A visually gorgeous movie, equally matched by every single beautiful person in the film. The early 60s had such style, and each frame of the movie graceful captured the elegance of this period, as well as the luminous quality of struggle of the main character. The acting by Colin Firth and Julianne Moore were both masterful. I haven't been a fan of many of her recent movies, and her performance in this one was redeeming. I even liked her accent. Matthew Goode looked absolutely delicious! This film has an uplifting quality, and I would enjoy seeing it again.

My bad. It wasn't what I expected and should have read the synopsis. I thought that it was a love story between a man and a woman. I have to say though, it was quite a good movie. Colin Firth was incredible, and maybe in a strange way even though it wasn't what I had expected...maybe I was supposed to watch this. Very good.

Can an unclothed Julianne Moore - one of my all-time favorites - overcome the otherwise deathly combination of typical slow British pacing and guy-on-guy scenes? No. Maybe it would take more than 30 seconds, anyway. So sad to waste the talents of such huge stars. Couldn't stomach more than about 30 minutes of this anyway, so cannot speak to the ending.
