Across the Universe's Julie Taymor shakes up Shakespeare with her adaptation of The Tempest, retrofitting the fantastical tale with a female lead, casting Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren in what is usually the male role of Prospero. The storyline follows the newly coined Prospera (Mirren), an exiled magician who uses her powers to call upon a tempest to bring her enemies to the island she's been forced to call home, not knowing that it will bring a suitor to her daughter, Miranda (Felicity Jones). The Miramax/Touchstone release also stars David Strathairn, Djimon Hounsou, Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, and Ben Wishaw. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

boring . . . turned it off after 30 mins. Just couldn't get into the old english speak, even though I should have realized, with it being a Shakespeare! Wish I had realized I could have watched it in subtitles to understand it better.

I've never read Shakespeare nor have I seen a play acted in the classical method so I was intrigued by this movie and intent on making sense of it. But it was impossible to follow and as others have mentioned I soon reverted to the subtitles. I don't suppose my critique of the story would be of much merit especially to those who enjoy the bard but I found the plot simple and trite with revenge, hierarchical squabbles, and the quest for marriage as the underlying themes. While those themes are still on our agenda these days they seem a dated and alone no longer hold my interest. However, I was completely engrossed in my own personal discovery of a historical style and thought, and in that light I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
