Hundra (1983)

Hundra (1983)
Member Rating:
In this routine, violent, and often trite female version of Conan, Hundra (Laurene Landon) is an Amazon whose tribe is slaughtered one day while she is away hunting, now it is up to her to find a suitable mate and begin to create a new tribe of little Hundras. Hundra's search takes her to a walled city, but before she finds the ideal male (he is a doctor), she has a lot of head-bashing and sword brandishing to do. Energetic but not exactly fast-paced, this may be an interesting film for feminists, or it may not. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

If you love movies depicting women warriors, then you will enjoy this movie. The opening scene shows the heroic Amazon warriors valiantly defending their turf against the invading barbarian men. The women are slaughtered, but not before taking a bunch of males with them. Later on, when Hundra gets her revenge on the killers, you will see some more superb action scenes. I also loved the ending, but I won't spoil it for you. This movie is a classic Amazon movie, a must-see, that belongs in your collection of DVDs. This is a cheesy B movie, but it does have a lot of good swordplay and action scenes. There is also the underlying theme for women's emancipation. Not the greatest movie ever made, but well worth watching, if you like the genere of barbarian action movies.

I was thoroughly entertained by the cheesy B-rated nature of this movie that it can't be bad, if you follow my logic. As a die-hard Conan, Red Sonja, etc. fan, I thought I'd relive the magic with this film. The pace however is a major flaw (Okay, you're on horseback. Just get to your destination already!). And the action's okay, but you could get the same amount of action watching a Xena episode, so today's standards really test your attention span here. The underlying movement for womens' rights is righteous but the exaggerated incompetancy of the men in this film makes you wonder why they weren't wiped out sooner. So, it really hurts both genders. All in all, this film matches my review title of being so bad it's good. Rent it to see how far we've come.
