Loosely based on a novel by John Hersey, this standard wartime drama stars Steve McQueen as Buzz Rickson, command pilot of a B17 bomber, and Robert Wagner as Ed Bolland, his co-pilot. When Buzz first comes on the scene, Ed admires him for his daring and skill in executing the bombing raids over Germany. But as time goes by, Buzz starts to fall for Ed's girlfriend Daphne (Shirley Ann Field) and at the same time, Ed begins to see that Buzz is only good at piloting bombers -- in civilian life he is a total washout.     In a role tailor made for Steve McQueen, a great WWII B-17 bomber pilot, who knows he's the best , takes his crew along for increasingly wilder bombing missions, but always brings them home alive. The title of the movie being a double entendre, Steve McQueen revels in the masculinity of being in love with war with "the most powerful group of men the world has ever seen" , and of course also sees himself as a lover of women in the same manner. Until of course, he gets his inevitable come-uppance on both counts. Top Gun stole this plot in it's entirety in the 1980's, but this one was the original for an earlier generation of veterans who remember heading out over Germany each morning at 5 am - and who didn't come back. To see the infantry version of this same movie plot also starring McQueen - see "Hell is for Heroes."

    If you like B-17's than you'll like this film. The flying scenes are superb. The plot is about one crew and specifically the pilot and co-pilot. One wants to finish his tour and return to the states, the other wants to remain in England until the end of the war. They are after the same woman also. The plot is OK and the flying scenes are great.

    As I have owned over 4000 movies and viewing many more, The War Lover was 1 that I had yet to own or watch and was sort of a disappointment staying inline with WWII movies in our post war period. There are many WWII movies that are quite a bit different than how we see and watch movies today, but in all fairness I was truly dying to see this flick, not what I expected...Marginal acting at best, flight and bombing scenes lacked true drama and excitement and not to take away from the importance of our brave men and women who sacraficed in that war BUT The War Lover should be apply re-named " lets talk about nothing while we Bomb Germany"! BIg disappointment, sorry!!
