A Walk in the Sun (1945)

A Walk in the Sun (1945)
Member Rating:
Harry Brown's honest, unsentimental WW2 novel A Walk in the Sun has been effectively adapted for the screen by Robert Rossen. Dana Andrews stars as Sgt. Tyne, a platoon squad leader in Italy who ends up assuming command of his platoon after a series of deaths. As they prepare to attack an isolated Nazi-held farmhouse, each of the infantymen reveals his true character as he dwells upon his background and contemplates the job at hand. The film's effectiveness lies in the non-cliched characterizations by a carefully chosen all-male cast. Huntz Hall of "East Side Kids" fame is particularly good in a scene wherein he argues over whether the human body or the leaf is the most complicated natural structure. Director Lewis Milestone's use of a ballad to link the action predates High Noon by some seven years. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A Walk In The Sun is a great movie. It is the simple story of an army infantry platoon whose mission is a capture a farmhouse and blow up a bridge after landing in Italy. The movie correctly depicts their attitudes towards the army and the enemy, their fears and actual boredom during their six mile walk to the target. This was a good story. There were some great lines like Butt Me since everyone was chain smoking and Nobody Dies. Unfortunately this was a very poor DVD transfer. The first 20 minutes of the film were shot at night and were so dark that I could not tell who was who. It improved afterwards. I had no problem with the ballad that was sung throughout the film but the musical score was very loud and overly dramatic. Great cast and a realistic story for a 1945 or 1946 black and white classic.

This is movie school textbook of how to make a war movie without any war and with very little money. It's all talk...among 29 "B" actors. Louis Milestone didn't have to pay any stunt men or rent any military equipment except costumes. He didn't have to film ANY battle scenes. No planes. No tanks. Just talk. The budget was stated at $800,000. I guess that covered the 29 costumes, the crew and actors, the Malibu Movie Ranch, black & white stock, a camera, craft services and the book.
