Inspired by writer/director Greg Mottola's own true-life job-from-hell experience, Adventureland stars The Education of Charlie Banks' Jesse Eisenberg as an uptight recent college graduate who discovers that he'll have to get a degrading minimum-wage job at a local amusement park instead of spending his summer drinking German beer, visiting world-class museums, and flirting with cute French girls. It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Eisenberg) has just graduated from college. James is all set to embark on his dream tour of Europe when his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) suddenly announce that they won't be able to subsidize the trip. Now the only things James has to look forward to this summer are sugar-fueled children, belligerent dads, and an endless parade of giant stuffed animals. When James strikes up a relationship with captivating co-worker Em (Kristen Stewart), however, he finally starts to loosen up. Suddenly, the worst summer ever doesn't seem quite so bad. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This film is a sad reminder that JOHN HUGHES is gone - and with him go the tenderness of teen coming-of-age comedies with heart. Totally lame, especially the hurry-up get-together but still downer ending. On the extra materials you can see the filmmakers are NOW like the carnie characters of the film THEN. (Speaking of film, the film stock on which the film was shot was beautiful in capturing a glossy film look for the mini-theme park.) The film did get right the pop-tops of the era, an interesting sidebar. Now that Hughes is gone though there's only one Director left who can do these flicks right, and that's AMY HECKERLING ("Fast Times ..." and "Clueless") but she doesn't make a movie but once a decade.

I came into this movie expecting it to be what it was. It was funny the whole way through. It was subtle, smart humor. There was not a slew of stupid jokes where they swear or talk about sexual anatomy or flatulence, so unfortunately most people won't like it. The story line was predictable, but nonetheless enjoyable. It was a good watch...no jump out of your seat action or gut busting humor, just a good movie.

This movie is not really a comedy - I did like the characters and the actors were good. I agree with comments that it was slow, but it was entertaining.
