Sometimes a Great Notion (1971)
Member Rating:
Also known as Never Give an Inch, this film was based on a novel by Ken Kesey. Paul Newman (who also directed) stars as Hank Stamper, the oldest son of an Oregon logging family headed by Henry (Henry Fonda). Hank's half-brother, Leeland (Michael Sarrazin), embittered over Henry's treatment of his late mother, returns after a ten-year absence to work in the family business. Leeland's presence causes friction with Henry, who resents his prodigal son's hippie mindset, and Hank, who perceives Leeland as a threat to his own position in the family structure. Hank has good reason to feel resentful: before long, his wife, Viv (Lee Remick), has entered into an affair with Leeland. Meanwhile, Henry wages an ongoing battle with the unionized loggers in the region, who threaten reprisals should Henry attempt to continue his business without union help. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is Kesey's best work, rather faithfully represented with a stellar cast. Is Block Buster only interested in padding their stock with the mindless drivel of new releases? Perhaps this hasn't been reviewed because of the difficulty of searching for it. It does not show up on a title search or on a search of the major actors. It does show up on a search of Ken Kesey.

This a true to life movie told in a very colorful way, it describes logging in some good detail. I think the reason it is so hard to get is because Jane Fonda didn't want her name associated with such an anti enviromental moviie, I am a retired logger from that erra and appreciate a chance to watch it again.

Despite performances by Paul Newman and Henry Fonda this movie is just so so with a gruesome ending (involving a severed limb). Not the best work of either great actor.
