This being a BBC production, you don't get all the Hollywood hoopla. However, it follows the book quite closely and Ben Kingsley is amazingly great in the role (though I couldn't help myself trying to see Gandhi through Silas). The child Eppie is absolutely adorably cute. I wish there were subtitles, which would have made it even more perfect for high school students studying the book. I loved the movie and made sure all my kids watched it, regardless of whether they have already studied the book or not.

If you're like me you had trouble staying awake when you had to read Silas Marner in high school. Well, this film starts slow and is dark and dreary so that may tempt you to "eject" it. Don't do that. Stick with it for one of the more rewading movie experiences of late. Nothing recent from Hollywood can compare with this wonderful tale.

This story of redemption gradually draws you in and ends leaving you satisfied. It is marred only by a jarring score that telegraphs each plot advancement so that any surprise is ruined. (Oh no, scary music, something bad is about to happen!) This is not so noticeable in the second half of the movie. If you've never read or forgotten the novel, this is a great substitute. Be sure to watch the hour long extra on George Eliot's life and the scandals of Victorian society which surrounded her.
