Rollover (1981)
Member Rating:
Alan J. Pakula directs the political thriller Rollover, produced by leading lady Jane Fonda's production company, IPC Films. Featuring a racist plot and negative stereotypes about the Arab world, this film reflected the American fear of the Middle East prevalent in the early '80s. Fonda stars as former film star Lee Winters, who inherits a multimillion-dollar company when her corporate bigwig husband is murdered. She teams up with banker Hubbell Smith (Kris Kristofferson) in order to find her husband's killer and survive in the world of high-stakes international finance. They become lovers and travel together to Saudi Arabia to secure a loan and to guarantee Lee's spot as the company's board chairman. However, they end up discovering an Arab company's plan to withdraw money from the world's banks in order to destabilize the Western economy. Rollover also stars Hume Cronyn and Josef Sommer. This story also foreshadowed Jane Fonda's marriage to corporate bigwig Ted Turner in 1991. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

It's hard to believe the equipment in the control room is only 30 years old because it looks so ancient. The ending strikes a chord to our current (2011) situation as a global economic meltdown occurs and people start to riot (including Cairo, Egypt....spooky).

Reviewing the movie aspects will be different from the content of the movie. This movie has a great cast, and director, which is largely why I rented it. The movie starts our with a mystery murder.[NO spoilers] But the movie then progresses at a slow pace and it is far into the movie before anything surrounding that comes into play. I am thinking that possibly the original script was good. Hence the cast and director. But the final editing was not up to what it should have been. The entire movie was too slow. The relationship that develops between Fonda and Kristofferson easy to predict. Both actors had been making good movies at this period, so they must have thought this one had potential. In mine and my mother's opinions, it was not "up to snuff". // Re: the storyline about banks and failures, and the current issues in our world . . . this movie was a fiction of something that actually could never have happened due to laws in place. Not even close to the core of current events.

I liked it. I think it did a good job of portraying the underbelly of the stock exchange how it gets manipulated and this was before automation really took hold.
