Reunion in France (1942)

Reunion in France (1942)
Member Rating:
Better known as Reunion in France, this women's-magazine-style romantic melodrama was the first major production for director Jules Dassin -- who was promptly demoted back to the MGM "B" department when the picture tanked at the box office. Joan Crawford stars as Frenchwoman Michele de la Becque, who comes to believe that her fiancé, wealthy munitions manufacturer Robert Cortot (Philip Dorn) is a Nazi collaborator. When her suspicions are apparently corroborated, Michelle falls in love with Pat Talbot (John Wayne), a downed American aviator stranded in occupied Paris. Only then does Michelle discover that she's been all wrong about Cortot -- but what to do about Talbot, who has been marked for death by the Gestapo? Ava Gardner has a tiny role as a Parisian shopgirl. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

They don't make them like this anymore. War effort movies were very important to sustain hope and morale. A substantial drama from the period, very well acted, framed, and developed story line. Only blk & wht gives this kind of atmosphere. Full of fantastic touches like the (Spoiler Alert) swastica table, american jazz in paris, old fashioned skywriting, great clothes, cars, and style of the era. Some beautifully choreographed shots of the French citizens under the incredible stress of German occupation. Very inspiring and wonderful film . My grandmother & her friends loved this film and thought the critics who panned it were idiots. Some things never change.

This movie was wonderful. I love Casablanca and must have seen 20+ times. I do not understand why this has not become just as popular.
