The play really happened, but how much is real and how much is just deadpan comedy remains for the audience to discern. A doc/mock about the summer when Jeff Goldblum returned to his home town of Pittsburgh and starred in the musical "The Music Man" at the Benedum. I grew up with Jeff in the Steel Valley - his dad was the town dentist on Main St. He's a few yrs older than me but I knew him and he was really a cool and great guy (as I'm sure he is now). I DO think this movie was fun for me as being from Pittsburgh it was fun pointing out all the landmarks and recognizing just plain folks we know from around here. However I think this would still be a noteworthy 3.5 stars any way. The premise here (I believe) is that in the Music Man the lead character (Professor Hill) had bitten off more than he could chew - and he had to believe he could do what he said he could do - even if it wasn't perfect. Jeff Goldblum really had to push himself to believe he could play this part and do musical theater - might not be the best - but he could do it. If you're a Goldblum fan and/or from Pittsburgh - you'll enjoy.

I really wanted to enjoy this movie. I grew up in Pittsburgh and still visit a couple of times a year. I love the sites around the city and every time I see something about PGH, I just have to watch. I really like Jeff Goldblum as well. But I could barely sit through this movie. It was boring. Boring, boring, boring. Sorry, Jeff. I wish more of the city could have really been seen like the Arts Festival, Regatta, and Oakland. And everyone should get a chance to see the city as you see it when coming in from the airport. Imagine coming through a long tunnel and when you come out, Bam! There's the city and you're on a bridge over one of PGH's rivers with the Point just to your left. Wonderful! The city really makes an entrance. But skip this one. There are other movies about and filmed in Pittsburgh that are much better and more entertaining.
