Nearly unknown, perhaps only performance of this lifetime. Ascetic Danish-Lutheran conscience informs this work -- heavy, dark with dread. Not true opera, Antikrist is more allegorical morality play than oratorio, its characters stock or archetypes/monsters who sing declamations, without narrative action or dialogue. Nonetheless, this is theatre, and impressive theatre at that. Langaard spent a lifetime producing this work, submitting it for review/performance without success, responding to rejection with revision. Curious compositional method for a church musician whose commitment to the art as service to G-d & community was a true vocation. Apparently also called to make John's revelations come alive in his own time/place. Writing w/ few qualities of late-late romantic music in Europe's 'musical capitols' (Scriabin's Moscow or Mahler's Vienna), Langaard is sui generis. Recommend to students of music history, Scandinavian culture, &or religious art.
