I thought the editing was the worst I have seen in a "good film". Classic existentialism taken to the "logical" conculsion of the why bother with living. For its time it was dated. Old over-used theme. Passion had none.

A man lives alone he is bitter and lives in the past but trys to live a poor simple live, but what is reaaly happening is that he has given up hope. Along come a girl that claims her marriage was great and she ownce had a wonderful life, but this man knows the truth, he found a letter in her purse this lady and her husband did not get along. They try a life together they fail. End of story. They fail because they cannot let go of their pasts.
