Dominion: A Prequel to the Exorcist (2005)
Member Rating:
In 2003, respected filmmaker and screenwriter Paul Schrader was hired to direct a prequel to the 1973 box-office smash The Exorcist. However, when Schrader turned in his film to executives at Morgan Creek Productions, the producers felt the film was not marketable, and they opted to remake the picture with director Renny Harlin, who brought a more visually aggressive approach to the story than Schrader's more contemplative vision. In 2004, Harlin's film, Exorcist: The Beginning, was released to middling critical and financial response, while the following year, Schrader's version went into limited release following film festival screenings. In Schrader's Exorcist: The Prequel, Father Lankester Merrin, the aging exorcist from the original story (played here by Stellan Skarsgård) is introduced in 1944, as he serves a flock in Holland during the Nazi occupation. After Nazi officers force Merrin to choose ten members of his congregation for immediate execution, Merrin is left an emotionally broken man, and he takes a leave of absence from his duties. Three years later, Merrin is taking part in an archeological project in East Africa, and he and his crew -- including priest Father Francis (Gabriel Mann), Major Granville (Julian Wadham), and Rachel Lesno (Clara Bellar) -- discover that a church from the fifth century has been buried in the desert. As Merrin and his associates discover that that a porthole to evil is located in the church, Cheche (Billy Crawford), a local boy Merrin has taken under his wing, begins showing signs of having fallen under the spell of Satanic forces. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Let's face facts, no addition to the Exorcist series of films will ever rival the original. Dominion is no exception. It is much more of a psychological thriller than a horror film. Yes, the plot is full of holes and unanswered questions, and the premise is much too grand in its overall scheme. However, the film is tolerable with some decent scenes. The backstory of Father Merrin in this film is far more grand than need be. I think what makes evil so chilling is its often banal and insidious presence in the ordinary. Why not just let the guilt ridden Father Merrin battle a local possession without the grand overtones of a Saint Michael's Shrine and the entombing of the fallen one. Overall, the movie is worth a look to those who have a love of the original. Cheers.

When I originally saw "Exorcist: The Beginning" I thought it was decent but nothing really special. When I saw that "Dominion" was released on DVD and one review said that it was what E:TB should have been, I was really excited. After watching it, however, I decided that either the reviewer had gotten the two movies confused or he was just smoking way too much crack. The real downfall of this movie has to be the ABSOLUTELY PITIFUL special effects. I would not be suprised if the director's 8-year old nephew was given the job using his home PC. The best example is when they go down into the church and a snake comes out from under the tomb. It would have looked better had they purchased a rubber snake from Toys'R'Us and pulled it along with a string. Over all, this movie pales in comparison to the other Exorcist prequel, and that isn't saying much...

I guess there will be no equal to the original Exorcist, which is probably a good thing.
