Three stories of human treachery are given an unexpected link in this dry comedy drama from Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur. Holt (Forest Whitaker) is an insurance investigator who is sent to Minnesota to look into a bus accident; the bus seems to have had significantly more passengers after it crashed than it had when it left the station, and Holt, posing as a police detective, needs to know who is telling the truth and who is attempting to cash in on the tragedy. Later, Holt is back on the job, when a badly burned body is found in a wrecked car, and the ID on the corpse indicates the victim was a small-time con artist with a police record. The victim's sister, Isold (Julia Stiles), claims that her brother's accident happened after his gas tank was drained and he was struggling to make his way home on a stormy night, but Holt isn't buying it; and Isold's husband, Fred (Jeremy Renner), and son, Thor (Alfred Harmsworth), don't seem especially trustworthy. Finally, a man and a woman struggle to make their way to shore after their car sails off a cliff into a body of water. While they seem grateful to make it back to dry land, it seems the woman has reason to be unhappy with her mate when she viciously attacks him. Who are these people, and what is their story? A Little Trip to Heaven received its North American premier at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Worth seeing, but either Mark Deming's review for All Movie Guide was written based on a press kit, or this film was heavily retooled afterward (unlikely). Perhaps, he left the screening for popcorn and confused some things. No one claims a fuel tank was drained, but we see that it did happen in a cover-up con. The drained tank is one of many flaws in the script. Why is the car, drained of gas and abandoned on a stretch of highway traveled by EVERY character in the film (including police officers), never found? It would easily provide clues to what happened, and commence a search for its owner, who no one seeks! Why is a life insurance carrier paying auto claims? There are relationships that will leave you guessing, and fantastic performances, but if you've ever walked on dry land, much of the storyline will seem implausible. I'm not sure why Icelandic filming doubled for Minnesota, but there must have been a reason. Phyllida Law's scenes are much too brief for her talents.

I thought the movie had entertainment value and the ending wasn't clear half way through the movie which keeps us interested. However at times Forrest trys to incorporate different accents and many times comes up short. However his acting has been evolving over the years and it's good to see decent roles coming his way. I liked the compassion that was displayed for the female lead Julia Stiles who also did an above adequate job in her performance. I film hard to dislike from an interesting story and above average acting as well as an ending that is up for grabs until the final moments.

This movie was definitely a lot more funny than what I expected. I had a great time watching it with friends as we laughed at the horrible accent forrest tried to put on, along with the shabby storyline and many inconceivable events. Definitely a good movie to watch with friends and a few beers but nothing you want to watch if you're looking for a serious murder mystery.
