The Last King (2004)
Member Rating:
When the forces of the English Revolution unseated -- and beheaded -- his father, Charles II fled to the Netherlands, only to reclaim the throne and usher in an era of prosperity years later. Meanwhile, his duplicitous mistress Barbara (Helen McCrory) works her machinations behind the scenes, scheming for her cousin George (Rupert Graves) to ascend the throne. This is a good Historical movie, however there are very explicit sex scenes on the first disc that I would not recommend to everyone. Definitely not fit for school children.

I enjoyed the film. It gives a good overview of the era, and captures the essence of Charles II, who was the Bill Clinton of English Kings in the sense that he was polarizing and quite the whoremonger, but also had a keen intellect and was enlightened for his time. Rufus Sewell does fine work here. Another reviewer who was shocked, SHOCKED by the baudy aspect of this film might want to bone-up (no pun intended) on the mores of the era. The movie does not exaggerate in this area.

I love movies and books about the history of the English monarchy but this one was a real disappointment. It was so disjointed and difficult to follow, spending too little time explaining the history and politics of the era and too much time on the whining and unbecoming women of Charles II. I wish he had beheaded all of them.
