A mother once neglected as child but possessed of a heart overflowing with love grows increasingly despondent as her beloved child begins to claim his independence in director Kevin Bacon's adaptation of Victoria Redel's best-selling novel. If loving too much were a crime, well-meaning but overbearing mother Emily (Kyra Sedgwick) would be spending life behind bars with no hope of parole. When Emily was a child, her parents were deeply in love with one another but tragically indifferent to their affection-starved daughter. Now a grown adult with a deep-rooted desire to bear a child, Emily goes to desperate lengths to conceive before eventually giving birth to an exceptionally gifted boy whom she names Paul. Emily's devotion to Paul burns brighter than a thousand suns as she creates a wondrous world of books, music, art, and games to share with her growing child, but her ever more desperate attempts to preserve the purity of their relationship reach a frantic fever pitch as a kindhearted local man opens his life to the pair and Paul prepares for his first year of school. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This movie explores the secret thoughts of many Mother's. It is a dangerous connection these two shared and her obsession was both frightening and beautiful. As a Mother, I cried, because I could relate on some level to her overwhelming love for her child. The dialogue was breathtaking and I would recommend any Mother, even Father, to watch this movie. It for sure did not receive the credit it is due! Amazing work of art!

Forget Jason Buchanan's synopsis of this film. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have not made a bad production since they got together. This film explores the dangers of parents trying to live their ideal of life through their children and DESPITE their children. Emily (Sedgwick) felt creatively stifled by her parents, and wants her "exceptional" son to be able to live creatively - to the point of ignoring reality. Paul (her son) wants to be one of the kids, which is not in Emily's plan. As she discovers that Paul is, and only wants to be, normal, Emily feels threatened. Ultimately, she cannot accept that Paul rejects her idealized existence, and she cannot fit into the "normal" world Paul wants to occupy. WATCH THIS MOVIE.

This movie is very hard to review. There are parts of the movie that are good and parts that make you sick. I know some mothers that are like this mother, so this movie is not really that far fetched.
