The second film from writer/director Whit Stillman, Barcelona is a smart, urbane comedy of manners set in Spain at the tail end of the Cold War. Taylor Nichols stars as Ted, an American salesman living in Barcelona. Out of the blue, he is visited by his acidic cousin Fred (Chris Eigeman), a U.S. Navy officer sent abroad to work damage control on rising anti-American sentiment. The textbook "Ugly American," Fred travels through the city in full military regalia, impervious to the constant taunts of "Fascist!" Like the similarly self-absorbed Ted, who has become involved with political activist Monsterrat (Tushka Bergen), Fred also finds romance, with a party girl played by Mira Sorvino. A brittle fish-out-of-water comedy, Barcelona is literate and sophisticated, a knowing essay on cultural identity and perception. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

While Whitman talks about 'romantic comedy', this actually turns out to be a coming of age for "boys to men". Maybe you're familiar with the notion that "A young man can act like a jerk and still be perceived as cute until the age of twenty-five, after which he is just considered a jerk." This movie is really about that, two young men untethered from their home, country and regular social network that would tend to stilt if not stifle their evolution - you know the dangers of growing up too close to home. Whitman does a slow moving detailed study of this critical point of change ... it's not light-hearted romantic comedy. The issues wrestled by the men are very realistic, as is their interactions as sounding boards and foils as life-long boyhood counsin/friends. So have the time to wade through it ...

If you like Woody Allen type humour this is your movie. Whit Stillman has 2 other movies...Manhattan and Last Days of Disco which I am having a hard time to get. The Chris Eigeman character is superb! You want to punch him out and you want to kiss him. I think he is in the other movies.

Entertaining movie, even though is extremely shallow. The girls are beautiful and mysterious; the guys are shallow jerks who act like idiots even though they are pseudo smart. It serves its purpose to entertain.
