Hollywood filmmaker Donald Petrie directs the comedy Welcome to Mooseport. Gene Hackman stars as former U.S. President Monroe "The Eagle" Cole. He's retired to the small New England town of Mooseport, ME, in order to write his memoirs and relax. The retirement is put on hold, however, when he's persuaded to run for mayor of the town. Meanwhile, local hardware store owner and plumber Handy Harrison (Ray Romano) is just the sort of plaid-shirted everyman to run against him. Cole seems a sure win in the race, especially with his loyal personal assistants (Marcia Gay Harden and Fred Savage) aiding his every move. The competition gets even more severe when Handy's sweetheart Sally (Maura Tierney) comes between the two men.     This movie was surprisingly fun and entertaining. We are glad we rented it.

    I passed on this film in the theater because of negative reviews. I just rented this movie and thought it cute and sweet. And I am a very tough critic. Predictable, yes. But the actors do a great job and I loved the slice of life. And believe it or not, I actually didn't know who was going to win in the end. Ray Romano is totally endearing. I hope he does more movies. I admit I'm baffled by all the negative reviews. If you were expecting ground-breaking film in a Hollywood romantic comedy....well, let's face it, in the history of cinema, that's happened maybe twice? Taken on face value, you will enjoy this.

    Not funny at all. Ramano does not translate to the big screen. Watchable...but pretty boring and uninteresting. Stopped and deleted from my DVR after 30 minutes.
