Smothered: The Great Smothers Brothers Censorship Wars (2002)
Member Rating:
With their blend of folk singing and stand-up comedy, Tom and Dick Smothers became a popular nightclub attraction in the early 1960's and were frequent guests on many television variety shows of the day. In 1967, in a bid to win younger viewers away from NBC's perennially popular western series Bonanza, CBS gave The Smothers Brothers an hour-long comedy-variety series airing on Sunday evenings The show became an unexpected hit, and in their second season, The Smother Brothers and their writing staff (which at the time included Rob Reiner and Steve Martin) began using the show as a platform for satiric humor which examined key issues of the day, including the war in Vietnam, drugs, racism, and the right-wing policies of the Nixon White House. While the show remained popular, it also became wildly controversial, and the Smothers Brothers soon found themselves battling their network and the FCC for the right to say what they wanted on their own show. Smothered: The Great Smothers Brothers Censorship Wars is a documentary which explores the history of the show, and how network brass and Nixon's cabinet worked together to pull the plug on a hit TV series; the film includes interviews with Tom and Dick Smothers, Rob Reiner, Pete Seeger, Harry Belafonte, and Joan Baez. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Perhaps ya had to be there back in the late 60s when folks were getting tuned-in to social awareness and turned on. One of the things we tuned into was the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. I was only in Jr High when this was on, but I can remember the skits word for word. This video is not so much about the show or the brothers but more about the censorship wars (and eventual cancellation and trial that followed) between the Smothers Brothers (primarily Tommy) and CBS. This video does offter short clips of several of their most contraversial routines and though I knew what was coming I still laughed. Their young writers at the time won an emmy their final year (after they were off the air). The writers were all in their early 20s and hand picked by Tommy Smothers. They included the likes of Steve Martin, Rob Reiner, Elaine May, Mason Williams, etc.

I enjoyed this but it was incomplete to me as I would have liked to see a bio of what has happened since the early days. I saw Tom & Dick Live at Valley Forge Music Fair (R.I.P.!) and it was one of the BEST shows I've ever seen.

I can't review this because of bogus edits from Blockbuster. I didn't try and use profanity or anything near it. Ironic, ain't it? This film is about censorship.
