The narrative unfolds simply about a young woman from Switzerland returning to her roots in Algeria. The village where she came from is in dry, bleak mountains, impoverished yet intensely stark. The photography is like layers of museum quality stills. For the protagonist, Algerian society is shockingly male-centered and brutal toward women, yet this observer never felt preached to. The women endure their existance without self pity and in doing so gain a heroic stature. I have studied and taught film. I urge the viewer to please please have a look. I thought Bent Keltoum a rare gem. Maybe you will too. Ricardo Villanueva

I found this film far exceeded my expectations. It is visually compelling with some memorable performances. I enjoyed very much the character of Keltoum's sister, Rallia's unswayable traveling companion. The portrayal of mental illness is very interesting in her face and eyes as she shifts from composure to anxiety every time a question is posed to her. While the plot twist and character reactions at the end seemed a bit contrived, overall I would highly recommend this movie to anyone with an interest in a visually moving, deeper film. It is not a Hollywood masses movie, perhaps Ahmed was looking for something with special effects?

It is horrible. If you have time to spend, and it snow outside, and you do not like TV and news, and you do not have any book at home and your wife is outside, and you do not have kids and you are very lazy, ... watch it.
