Highway (2001)
Member Rating:
Two friends hit the road to escape some homicidal gangsters with a score to settle in this angsty Gen-X flick set against the backdrop of the mid-'90s grunge music scene. Highway opens with its mohawked post-teen hero Jack (Jared Leto), up to his usual routine: smoking pot, cleaning pools, and engaging in vigorous sex with a mobster's wife. It isn't long before vengeful thugs come calling to his Las Vegas trailer-park home, however, and Jack has to flee town with his drug-dealing best buddy, Pilot (Jake Gyllenhaal). The two decide to travel to Seattle -- in the week preceding Kurt Cobain's suicide -- and along the way they encounter a succession of drifters, losers, and hangers-on, including a sweet-hearted prostitute named Cassie (Selma Blair). Highway's working title was "A Leonard Cohen Afterworld," a reference to a lyric from Kurt Cobain's song "Pennyroyal Tea"; the film was written by Scott Rosenberg, who previously made a name for himself with Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, Beautiful Girls, and Con Air. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

I particularly watched this film because I am a recent Jake Gyllehaal aficionado, so at times I feel a compulsion to see his early films, such as 'Bubble Boy' and this one. As the "sexually confused" adolescent "Pilot", Gyllenhaal doesn't disappoint . None of the actors do, really. Enjoy the trip!

I love all the actors in this movie, so I was really disappointed in just how bad this was. There was barely a plot, just a disjointed mix of drugs and sex and an unfortunate carnival freak. And the ending ... there are just no words for how stupid and unsatisfying the ending was. Do yourself a favor and save your queue space from this one.

I think this is a fun movie. the Friendship between Jack and Pilot is sincere and unconditional, and that's one of things I enjoyed must of the movie. I rated it very high because I will watch it again anytime. People shouldn't expect so mucn intensity and drama in this movie. its just abou adolescence and the enviroment of the 90's which involves drugs, but that is not a big deal.
