Synopsis of The Canadian Ballet
In the United States, nightclubs featuring exotic dancers are generally not allowed to feature nude performers if they are to also serve alcohol, and a number of states carry laws that restrict the style and manner of a dancer's performance. Canada, however, has no such laws, and as a result, a number of Canadian clubs feature elaborate stage presentations that also include fully undraped dancers. The Canadian Ballet (the title comes from a name American strip club enthusiasts have given to some of Canada's classier clubs) is a documentary that examines the strip club scene in Canada and how it differs from its counterparts in America, as well as offering a glimpse into the offstage lives and attitudes of the women who perform at Canadian "gentlemen's clubs." Canadian Ballet won the prize for Best Documentary at the 1998 New York Independent Film and Video Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
