This suspense drama features an all-star cast, including Richard Benjamin, Dyan Cannon, James Coburn, James Mason, Ian McShane, and Raquel Welch. An interesting production fact about the film: its screenplay was written by actor Anthony Perkins and lyricist/songwriter Stephen Sondheim. Their careers depend on keeping in the good graces of Clinton (James Coburn), a powerful movie producer. That is why a group of actors, director, agents and other movie professionals (who hate each other) accept an invitation to spend a week on the producer's yacht on the anniversary of his wife's untimely death in a hit-and-run car accident. Once on board, Clinton requires them to play a vicious game which involves each person's revealing a damaging secret about themselves or someone else in the party. When one of the secrets to be revealed involves the hit-and-run murder of his wife, the game turns fatal. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This movie is a puzzle-master's dream, but still perfectly entertaining if you just watch it unfold. It's acted well overall (with only one exception), but is fun to watch relatively "campy" actors not ham it up too much. One thing to watch for in the beginning is how each character is introduced as they receive their invitation. Also watch for James Mason, who also stared in the original Lolita. There are inside jokes (I'd love to have heard the directing of Raquel Welch: "okay, just play yourself - and try to be an even worse actress - ah, perfect.") This is as clever as Witness For The Prosecution and as witty as Sleuth, but even more fun to watch.

We absolutely loved this movie. The script, it's acting, its mystery, everything about it was pure entertainment. How have they not remade this movie? The classic early 70's references and character interactions were top-notch and really make this movie timeless. I could say very easily that Cannon and Coburn stole the show with their outstanding witty performances, but the others were just as good (other than the sometimes off-kilter-acting of Raquel Welch.....but hey, it IS Raquel Welch - no complaints).
