Entertaining, engrossing installment in the 'Sharpe's' series, introducing us to the horrible yet fascinating character of Obadiah Hakeswill, Sharpes' vaguely insane, terrifically violent, cunning nemisis. Through a series of misfortunes, Sharpe loses his company, his rifles, and finds himself on the seiging side of Badajoz, the fortification where his lover and their infant daughter are trapped. Obadiah, seeing the opportunity to do Sharpe yet another ill turn, plans to follow the seiging companies into Badajoz and reach Sharpe's family first, doing them harm. A special nod to Daragh O'Malley, whose Patrick Harper is likeable, imposing, and wonderfully Irish. Also recommended: Bernard Cornwell's series of Sharpe's books, upon which the TV series was based.
