Bait (2000)
Member Rating:
In this action comedy, a crook trying to go straight finds himself lured back to crime by the police, without his even knowing it. When master criminals Jasper (Robert Pastorelli) and Bristol (Doug Hutchison) pull a heist that nets $40 million in gold but leaves behind several dead policemen, detective Edgar Clenteen (David Morse) pulls out all the stops to put the thief behind bars. Jasper is jailed and ends up sharing a cell with Alvin Sanders (Jamie Foxx), a habitual small-time criminal who was brought in after a bungled robbery of a seafood wholesaler. Jasper, who has a weak heart, suffers a heart attack in jail, and as he dies, he gives Alvin a message to pass along to his wife. Eager to track down Bristol, who still has the gold, Clenteen has Alvin secretly implanted with an experimental tracking device, and then lets him go free, while spreading the word on the street that Jasper told him where the gold was stashed shortly before his death. While Alvin makes an effort to start his life over and get a straight job, Clenteen and his staff are electronically following his every move, waiting for Bristol and his associates to track him down. Bait was directed by Antoine Fuqua, whose previous credit was the stylish crime thriller The Replacement Killers. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Bait is great! David Morse is just the right touch of bad for a good guy and Jaime Foxx is the perfect touch of good for a bad guy. Amongst a ton of laughs, there are plot twists and action. I have seen this movie a few times, and I have no doubt that I will watch it again! If you read the guys *spoilers below, do not let it detour you from the movie. There is nothing worse than people picking at every little non-consequential little thing and some of what was said certainly does not hold water.

After reading another view of this movie I did not expect much at all from this film. BOY, was I surprised. This is a very entertaining movie. And that is what movies are supposed to do. This is a fast-moving film that gives you a very interesting incite as to how far a governmental agency will go, to get what they want to know. To date 12-05, there are only two reviews. I take issue with the other reviewer. Not how they may, or may not like movie. But rather it seemed as if it were nit-picked rather then reviewing, and too much of the movie was given away without cause. My only problem with the movie is that is was just too easy to make a black man the butt of their relentless pursuit. Other-wise the movie has a smart plot and lots of hi-tech wizardry. If you liked “The Peacemaker”with George Clonny and Nicole Kidman, you’ll really like this film. Smartly written and directed the movie delivers two fast passed hours....and the very cleaver ending is a real plus.
