Heart Like a Wheel (1983)

Heart Like a Wheel (1983)
Member Rating:
Heart Like a Wheel stars Bonnie Bedelia as real-life racing champion Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney. Overcoming sexist hurdles, Shirley works hard to qualify for the major auto race competitions of America. Firmly in her cheering section is her dad (Hoyt Axton), and--at least at first--her husband, mechanic Jack Muldowney (Leo Rossi). When Jack, jealous of Shirley's success, leaves her, she casts her lot with troublesome banned racer Connie Kalita (Beau Bridges). The film comes to a head at the 1966 National Hot Rod Association World Championship, which Shirley eventually wins three times. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I'm not even into drag racing, but I really enjoyed this movie. It's a great story about pursuing your dream and persistence paying off.

My husband wanted this film, and it watched it too. It was okay. I guess, it worth a watch. Acting wasn't bad.

I viewed the entire movie and then wondered why. It plays like a B made-for-TV-movie from the 80s. Watching the special features, especially the interview between the three main characters, after seeing the dramatized version of their inter-relationships, just made it all bizarre. I'm sure also that the depiction of the real-life sexism she encountered for her times was given the "lite" dramatic treatment. Noteworthy chiefly for the overly maudlin Hoyt Axton semi-cameo as Muldowney's father, and lots of action on the part of Bedelia's very attractive younger figure.
