Member Rating:
Inspired by true events that occurred in France in the mid-'90s, this French-language feature explores the relationship between two best friends who come from opposite sides of the tracks. Delphine (Maud Forget) is 14 years old and shy, a delicate and studious high-school patron who comes from an upper-class background. After following around Olivia (Lou Doillon), the new student at her high school and a dreadlocked, outspoken outcast, the two develop a close bond. Olivia is from a broken home and has a free-spirited approach to life. One night, Olivia takes Delphine to a nightclub where they meet Laurent (Robinson Stevenin), a brooding teenager with whom Delphine falls instantly in love. Olivia similarly falls for Laurent's friend Alain (Maxime Mansion) and the four enter a free-wheeling world of parties, alcohol, and sexual experimentation. Delphine becomes immersed in the prospect of belonging to someone and begins to sacrifice some of her cherished beliefs to satisfy Laurent. Olivia, the more world-weary of the two, spots Delphine's blind dedication and tries to help her achieve happiness without succumbing to the indulgent depths to which the foursome is rapidly becoming accustomed. ~ Jason Clark, Rovi

Good movie. Very European. Without hypocrisy. Real! About real kids. And for kids! I believe kids in America need to see not just Garry Potter, but stuff like that as well.

I had mixed feelings. This is a well acted tale of teenage love gone wrong. A sweet, innocent 14 year old girl ends up prostituting herself and her best friend, for her tortured, disturbed boyfriend, in the name of love. Chilling, disturbing, and real. It's based on a true story. Without the self-conscious exploitation of a film like Kids. But in the end something seemed missing, A deeper theme, or a larger truth. I buy that teens do insane things in the name of love, caught in hormonal rushes, but somehow the film did not transcend that one obvious notion. It felt almost like it did not take it's own story seriously enough. There was even something a little Hollywood cliche about it, despite all its extremity. Especially the good nerdy boy she should like instead of her bad boy boyfriend. Most critics I respect liked it more than I, so maybe I will revisit some day.

Loved this movie. It's shocking but it's sad that this sort of thing happening in real life doesn't surprise me at all. It's easy to be taken advantage of by your first "love", especially when you're young. I was glued to the screen anticipating what would happen next. This can happen in America just as it can happen in France. All in all, highly recommended! I don't know why the rating is so low.
