Mary, Mother of Jesus (1999)

Mary, Mother of Jesus (1999)
Member Rating:
"The Greatest Story Ever Told, As Seen Through a Mother's Eyes." Coproduced by Eunice Kennedy Shriver and her son Bobby Shriver, this reverent retelling of the Biblical story of the Madonna stars Melinda Kinnaman as young Mary, Perrilla August as the older Mary, David Threlfall as Joseph, and Toby Bailiff and Christian Bale as, respectively, the younger and adult Jesus. The film takes a decidedly Ecumenical approach, with Mary, already aware of her Son's role in the future of mankind, gently guiding and counseling Jesus as He launches His ministry and accomplishes His miracles. She must also stand by stoically as Her beloved Son is persecuted and crucified, knowing that what must be, will be. Filmed (incredibly) in and around Budapest, Mary, Mother of Jesus debuted November 14, 1999 on NBC. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A real historical, traditional, and biblical stinker. Even my good Catholic friend whom I watched this with was shocked at the liberties taken with Mary's characterization...bordering on a feminist point of view. TOTALLY unacceptable to try to do that! Additionally, the movie is disjointed and slow, skipping decades randomly, mixing up events, and even having Mary quote New Testament scripture to a 12 year old Jesus! Do yourself a favor. Rent "The Nativity Story" instead for a more authentic retelling of Mary and her family's attitudes and relationship to her son.

Well done, story line weak and untrue -- a good cast and Christian Bale is awesome. Maybe once around to view.

Overall, this is a good movie and has its moments. There are a few disconcerting areas where they show Mary seeming to complain and Joseph full of "hate". These things are contrary to understood Theology of the Holy Family. It's also funny to see "Batman" performing miracles as Jesus and getting crucified, but he does a good job in the role.
