The French Connection II (1975)

The French Connection II (1975)
Member Rating:
This sequel to the Oscar-winning The French Connection picks up almost exactly where the earlier film leaves off. Still on the trail of drug kingpin Frog One (Fernando Rey), narcotics officer "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman) leaves his Manhattan stomping grounds and heads for Marseilles. There, Popeye is captured by Frog One's minions, who pump him full of drugs in hopes of turning the cop into a hopeless junkie. After a grueling "cold turkey" treatment, Popeye is up and about and chasing after the villains, determined to mete out justice. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Once you get over the ridiculousness of Popeye being sent to Marseille, you still need to deal with a lot of changes from the original. The exported Doyle is still a hard-nosed bigot, but he, like Ebert has complained, gets turned into almost a comic foil, even though half the movie is spent with him battling heroin addiction. If the first FC is unfarily remembered for the chase scene, this one's closing events are similarily underheralded. To be fair, Frankenheimer doesn't try to top the original. But it would have been nice if II provided more than closure. Depending on how you appreciate film, you will either love or hate the cold-turkey sequence.
